On the eve of a key meeting of the European Space Agency's (ESA's) governing council, European governments are sharply divided over their contributions to the U.S.-led international space station. Unless a deal can be struck, Europe's contribution to the project may be in jeopardy--and ESA itself could be severely damaged. A sidebar examines similar disagreements over ESA's space science budget, with the United Kingdom and Germany pressing for cuts in the science budget.
