By engineering polymers that attract and bind liver, nerve, and other cells, scientists are beginning to create artificial organs that are biologically ``real'' and may one day be used to supplement or replace damaged body parts. A sidebar looks at efforts, such as growing artificial skin on collagen matrices, that are close to clinical use.
