The Vivitron, a new electrostatic accelerator in Strasbourg, France, that is one of Europe's top facilities for nuclear structure research, has been shut down for 9 months because of difficulties in replacing a rubber-coated fabric belt. The hiatus has delayed an Anglo-French project to study superdeformed nuclei. The Vivitron's managers are confident, however, that they have solved the problem and that the machine will soon be up and running with a newly designed belt that was installed last month.
