A multinational team of researchers has now added a second breast cancer susceptibility gene, called BRCA2, to the one found 15 months ago and known as BRCA1. Together, mutations in the two genes account for most of the roughly 10% of breast cancers that are inherited, and the hope is that having this second gene will lead to better screening tests for the cancer-causing mutations, as well as a better understanding of how breast cancer develops.
