A new area for exploring human origins may be opening up. Three weeks ago, in the Danakil Desert of Eritrea, a team of Eritrean and Italian scientists unearthed a well-preserved hominid skull and other fossils dating to about 2 million years ago. Although the skull's precise identity is still shrouded in sand and stone, researchers think it could be Homo erectus; in any event, it is the first hominid found in the region.
