The math community has been up in arms over a plan by the University of Rochester to do away with its graduate program in mathematics as an economy move. With only lower level math courses to teach, the number of tenured faculty will drop from 21 to 10. The American Mathematical Society has adopted a resolution protesting the plan (available on-line at
http://www.ams.org/committee/profession/roch-ap1.html), and other mathematicians argue that Rochester's strengths in quantitative fields such as science and economics make the move particularly unwise.
