Heidelberg, Germany--Geneticists are making surprising progress in deciphering the genetics of some complex diseases, ranging from asthma to schizophrenia, which involve interplay between several genes and the environment. Until recently, locating such 'susceptibility' genes was considered an impossible task, but new techniques, large collaborations, and industrial-style approaches are making their mark. One obstacle is proving hard to overcome, however: finding enough families with high incidence of certain diseases to donate DNA samples.
