Berlin--The announcement last week that the Swiss drug giants Sandoz and Ciba-Geigy plan to merge is the latest in a series of consolidations that is changing the face of the world's pharmaceutical industry. The two companies last year spent a total of more than $2 billion on R&D. The new joint company, to be called Novartis, is expected to be a force in genome-related research, although some pruning of overlapping research is expected.
