What drives Jupiter's howling winds--the distant heat of the sun, or the planet's own internal heat? Planetary scientists finally got an answer, thanks to the latest results from the Galileo probe, which plunged beneath Jupiter's cloud tops in December. The probe found that the winds penetrate deeply into the fluid planet--below the level of sunlight--and so are probably spawned by Jupiter itself.
