New Lead to Safer Marrow Transplants

In at least half of bone-marrow transplant patients, the donor immune cells turn against the recipient's own tissues, triggering a deadly ailment called graft-versus-host disease. Now doctors led by hematologist Claudio Bordignon at the San Raffaele Scientific Institute in Milan, Italy, may have found a solution. On page 1719 of this issue, they report the first successful human test of a gene therapy designed to halt the attack of the donated cells on the recipients' tissues.
